Automaton 1868 Draft Design Framed Wall Clock
This wall clock Automaton 1868 Draft Design is made of several layers of wood, cardboard and paper, painted high quality acrylic paint. The clock is unique as this is the only copy that exists.
While making the design of this clock we were inspired not only by old mechanical wrist watches which gear motors seem to us real works of art but mechanical toys which were quite popular among the rich in XVIII in France. These toys were called automatons and were self-operating machines, or machines designed to follow automatically a predetermined sequence of operations, or respond to predetermined instructions. Some automata, such as bellstrikers in mechanical clocks, are designed to give the illusion to the casual observer that they are operating under their own power.
By making it we would love to preserve the idea of the draft that precedes any item which is constructed. Yet this draft still lives inside the item and we wanted to show their interconnection as a whole. Moreover we were eager to experiment with new materials that we totally new to us as creators.
The hands motion is complemented by the movement of 3 gears each of which is an AA battery operated, thus transforming the clock into a kinetic installation.
